We are in our second year at Harvard Farm, a small organic farm in north-west Dorset. Our aim is to farm regeneratively: so far we have been using sheep to restore pasture and soils, while also planting trees and hedgerows and generally attempting to improve biodiversity.
Wool production is central to what we do, and relates to valuing all aspects of each sheep and developing them to their full potential. We shear in-house and take pride in producing good quality fleeces which we sell to spinners and crafters, though we have also produced our own yarn through the Natural Fibre Company in Cornwall.
Our fibre focus to date has been on Gotlands and Teeswaters, who produce such wonderful unusual wool, but we also have Dorsets (Poll, Horned and Down) and are interested in using their fibre as well.
We are starting the conversation about how the South West can produce more home-grown textiles and garments in a more healthy, resilient and regenerative textile ecosystem.
