A wonderful opportunity to showcase the long silky fibres of the Suri alpacas and create some very special garments.
Dark Sky Alpacas is an alpaca breeding and fibre business nestled into the edge of Bodmin Moor in North Cornwall. The name was inspired by the moor’s status as an International Dark Sky Park and, in addition to the wonderful night skies, Wendy and Tom feel lucky to live in a such a beautiful place amongst the ancient granite and Cornish hedgerows with their alpacas and dogs.
They have chosen to specialise in suri alpacas, the rarer of the two alpaca breeds, who make up less than 10% of the worldwide alpaca herd. Suri have famously long silky fibre with stunning lustre and, due to their relative rarity, they believe there is a wonderful opportunity to showcase their fibre and create some very special garments. Working with Two Rivers Mill and British Alpaca Fashion Wendy and Tom have produced their first pieces in 2021 – a new take on the traditional Cornish smock – made with 100% Cornish alpaca and produced end to end in the South West.
Bespoke commissions are welcome and they’d be happy to work with designers interested in working with alpaca fibre.
We are starting the conversation about how the South West can produce more home-grown textiles and garments in a more healthy, resilient and regenerative textile ecosystem.
